For beginners

Take the next step towards advancing your photography skills with your camera.

Switch out of Auto Mode and explore the real art of photography.

For this course, you will need a camera which can be switched to manual.

The software demonstrations and tutorials will be with Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. If you have your own laptop with this software, please feel free to bring it along and practice alongside the tutorials.

About The Course

Photography is probably the most popular hobby in the world. Since the introduction of cameras in mobile phones, people have been snapping away aimlessly, not actually learning anything about the art of photography. Oculus Studios will be holding a four week course at two hours per week, giving camera owners the tools they need to understand the basics of digital photography. The course will be held on a Thursday evening at Oculus Studios, Norman Street, Warrington, Cheshire WA2 7HW

The Elements

Exposure

Covering ISO, shutter speed and aperture. Learn how to combine the elements which affect exposure. Switch your camera off auto to one of the many other available modes with confidence, achieving different, artistic results.

Composition

Understand what works and what doesn’t work when framing your photograph. Learn where to place your subject in the frame using the “Rule of thirds”.

Lighting

In this section, we will explore both natural light and flash photography, including on camera flash and photographic studio strobes. When to use flash and how much should be used. What effects can be created by using flash or a combination of flash and daylight.

Photography Software

Photographic software plays a major part in modern photography. In this section, we cover the two industry standards from Adobe, Photoshop and Lightroom.

Learn how to enhance photographs using the software. Make your photographs POP with simple adjustments.

Critique

During and at the end of the course, we will assess each others photographs as a group. Together, we will learn to constructively critique and improve our images. At the end of the course, you will be able to not only take better photographs with confidence, you will be able to understand the basic concepts of the art of photography.
